Ben is not written with much personality he could be played any number of ways by any number of actors. The movie’s glue is Sheridan’s performance in the lead role. There’s a ceiling to the enjoyment, but there are enough laughs to keep the proceedings afloat between massacres, such as the strip club named Laurence of Alabia, Carter’s habit of shooting selfies or the physical gags dotted throughout. It also helps that mysterious hottie Denise ( Sarah Dumont) is around to handle the undead-pureeing shotgun wearing a tank top and short shorts. It’s the scouts’ ingenuity and dedication to each other that makes the film better than a simple collection of gags. The how and why aren’t particularly important, although an amusing opening sequence tells enough for viewers to wave off the exposition and settle in for the carnage. Titular scouts Ben ( Tye Sheridan), Carter ( Logan Miller) and Augie ( Joey Morgan) are approaching the usual teen crossroads when the zombie apocalypse breaks out.
