![]() ![]() Similarly, the general lack of dates and references made the chapters covering 1900-1920 more convoluted and overall inaccurate. In one place Chepesiuk identifies Dutch Schultz as a key figure in Joe Masseria's gang. The few chapters on other gangsters are convoluted and inaccurate. This book would be better titled Black Gangsters of Harlem. This preference crops up again in Black Gangsters of Chicago. In this case, the author clearly is more interested in black gangsters than other gangsters. The result is more attention to some figures than others. There were many gangsters in Harlem 1900-2000. This is probably a compromise between the author trying to add some academic credentials and the publisher making the books more user-friendly to casual readers. Although the appendices are full of references and footnotes, they are not connected to specific passages, just a general works cited per chapter. A late addition to their lineup includes Gangsters of Harlem. Barricade Books has carved a niche for itself in true crime. ![]()

They all tended to interpret the National Socialist regime of Hitler as a sort of capitalist reaction to the socialist tendencies of the immediate post-war period, while I saw it rather as the victory of a sort of lower-middle-class socialism, certainly thoroughly anti-capitalistic and anti-liberal but taking over all the methods of socialism. Theo’s life goes through various twists and turns as he lives with his friend’s wealthy family, moves with his father and father’s girlfriend Xandra to Las Vegas where he meets the pivotal character and friend Boris – and finds his heart and compassion in rescuing Xandra’s neglected Malti-poo dog Popper – my favorite sub-plot. He finds another survivor who indicates he should take the famous painting “The Goldfinch,” which he does. The gist of the book is thus: As a teen, Theo loses his mother in a freak accident when the museum they are visiting is bombed. There are some seriously good food mentions in this book, which is partly why I read it three times. Did the biographer get it right? However, the problematic is more serious with a novel since one expects the novelist will take liberties. Of course one asks the same accuracy questions of a biography. But, is Denise Giardina’s Bonhoeffer the real Dietrich Bonhoeffer? In historical fiction does it matter? ![]() Now I have read Denise Giardina’s novel, been utterly gripped by it, moved by it, and even though I’ve known for 30 years or more that he died in a Nazi prison camp, I still cried in the last page when he was executed. I can never make up my mind about what such a novel SHOULD be, so how do I judge it? How much exact history how much novelistic creation should I expect? I’ve known of the work of Dietrich Bonhoeffer for many years, and while I had read a few articles about his work and some short mentions of him here and there, I had never done any more systematic study of his work or his life as a whole. Writing comments on a novel about an historical person is a special difficulty for me. SAINTS AND VILLAINS – A NOVEL By Denise Giardina Book review - SAINTS AND VILLAINS – A NOVEL By: Denise Giardina ![]() ![]() Why would a comedian write a book about dating and romance? Once, Ansari went out on a date with a woman and everything seemed to go fine. ![]() Maybe more should consider doing the same. This route may be a natural extension for them. Comedians are often considered to be thinkers and cultural critics. Come to think of it, maybe it’s not that far-fetched for a comedian to write a research-backed book. Then again, I also thought, good for him for doing something atypical for a comedian he seemed genuinely interested in the subject. It wasn’t even supposed to be a funny anecdotal book about dating, but one with actual research. When I initially heard about Ansari’s book, it seemed a little strange to me that a comedian would write a book about dating. Keep in mind that all of this was before Ansari was hit by the #MeToo movement. I think I first heard about his book on an NPR show. ![]() I don’t follow Aziz Ansari, but I knew who he was, I probably had heard a joke or two from him before and I had heard that he wrote a book on dating. I browsed through and came across a picture of comedian Aziz Ansari posing under the words Modern Romance. I think at the time that I chose this book I was simply looking for another audiobook. ![]() |
